The new work: human machine complementarity.
We humans have always worked with objects – ritualising them in spiritual practice – tools – material tuned to a specific purpose – and machines. Machines are complex tools mostly tied to a specific environment; the factory. Here there always was a strong bond between humans and (their) machines. In fact their cooperation foreshadowed the practice of Internet of Things (IoT). The old hands knew their machines inside out. They listened to the sounds, the rhythm, and vibration. They felt the heat in the pumps and pistons. They would predict breakdown and decline in performance. As the old hands left with this intuitive knowledge, this practical wisdom, each indicator was replaced with a sensor, one for heat, one for vibration, one for sound, one for output and with any new parameter a sensor was attached to the machine. It was called predictive maintenance.
